Little Free Library

The Little Free Library box in my neighborhood.

One day when I was walking home, I spotted this little house-shaped box filled with books and videos, tucked away behind some trees. On the front were the words “Little Free Library”, and a URL for their website. I looked them up. Here’s what it’s all about (quoting from their front page):

It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. You can, too!

What a novel idea. I dropped some books off there (in fact, the book with the pink cover in the photo above is one of them). I absolutely love books, and I love this whole concept. Anything we can do to encourage people to read is great, and it’s especially good for areas that don’t have a public library.

This particular little library in my neighborhood is hidden and easy to miss, but once you know it’s there, it’s exciting to walk by because you never know what treasures you’ll find. As a kid I would’ve been all over it.

To check and see if there’s a Little Free Library in your area, there’s a searchable map on the website.
