Hello July! Plus reflection on June Goals

Well it’s been a long time since I blogged last. Now it’s a new month and I’d like to start blogging again. I have a TON of Project 365 pictures to post (I’ve still been taking a photo a day). I’ve got to reflect on my June goals and look ahead to this new month. July is my favorite month of the year and I’m so excited for summer.

As a way of getting back into writing each day, I’m going to do the Daily Prompt at The Daily Post. I’ll be responding to the prompt for July 2nd later today.

So I set quite a few goals for myself in June. How did I do on them?

JS Level-Up: Spend 30 minutes studying my JavaScript book each morning. I did OK on this one for the first two and a half weeks of the month. Diligently worked my way through several chapters of the book. I fell out of the habit near the end of the month.

Creativity Hour: Spend an hour each Monday-Thursday doing some sort of creative project. I failed horribly on this one. 🙂 I had designated the evenings to creativity hour (9-10 PM), but by the time 9PM rolled around I was too tired to do much besides read.

Experiment With a Rotation Diet: Adopt a 4-day rotational diet, where I eat (mostly) Paleo-style, and after eating a particular food, don’t have that food (or anything else in the same taxonomy) again for at least 4 days. I did pretty well with this for the most part. It’s hard to get the hang of at first and I still struggle with planning shopping trips. But I love eating like this. I’ve had more variety in my diet this past month than I have for the past couple of years. I’ve tried a host of fruits, veggies, and meats (especially seafood) that I’ve never had before. Instead of following recipes, I improvise a lot more. It’s also been fun to scout out different farmers’ markets and grocery stores. I’m not perfect at the diet, but I figure the 80-20 rule works well here. Looking forward to continuing with this going forward.

Stretching: I do a lot of stretching in the Bar Method classes, but not as much at home as I would have liked. Le sigh.

Foundation Training: I downloaded all of the videos, but didn’t end up getting to it this past month. Le sigh.

Bar Method Classes/Additional Fitness Training: Happy to say that I was pretty consistent about attending classes regularly during June. I also started on the routine my brother made for me.

Overall I was moderately successful at my goals for June. I might not have done all of them at 100% but I’m happy with the diet changes I’ve made and that I’ve stuck with my fitness routines.

I have to say that setting aggressive goals each month was getting stressful. I can’t live like that anymore! So for July I am going to take it easy. I’ll continue to experiment with the rotation diet and to go to Bar Method classes/do exercises at home. I will continue to work my way through the JavaScript book. Other than that my only other goal for the month is to just enjoy each day the best that I can. Like I said, July is my favorite month and I don’t want the days to “slip away” and the next thing I’m asking is, “where did the month go?” I guess what I’m saying is that I want to practice being more mindful this month, more present with what’s going on around me instead of caught up with to-dos, must-dos, and should-dos.

I miss the summer days of my childhood. Summer seemed to stretch for so long, and most of the time I just sat around in my room reading books and eating Starbursts and Jolly Ranchers. My mom did crafts with my brother and me, and we took long walks around the neighborhood (and counted how many cats we’d see on one walk). My brother and I were very imaginative and we’d spend hours playing games with our stuffed animals. Or we’d play Game Boy, or go swimming. It was all moment to moment and I didn’t spend a lot of time thinking, “OK I need to do this and that and that and this.” I want to go back to that headspace the best I can this month!
