I hope everyone who celebrates holidays this time of year had a good one. I enjoyed spending time with my family in Chapel Hill. I’ll be here for another week and a half, and the plan is to disconnect as much as possible.
Christmas has come and gone, but I wanted to share one of my favorite Christmas choral songs: Candlelight Carol, by John Rutter. I actually never sang this as part of any chorus. Instead, I discovered it back in 2006 when looking for other songs.
I like this song so much that I ordered the sheet music from J.W. Pepper and learned the parts on my own so that I can sing along with whatever part I feel like singing at the time.
My favorite part of the song occurs during the refrain. It’s hard to explain, but I like how, when they’re all singing “…in excelsis deo“, the baritones finish slightly behind the sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses. I love the harmony at the very end as well. Enjoy!
